It's March already, Spring is almost here. In response to our upcoming End of Year Assessment and preparation for next school year....
the 3rd- 4th scholars are reviewing Fractions concepts using Front Row application. The scholars earn coins while they review concepts and explore new concepts as they unlock levels. The scholars can redeem their earned coins for shopping trips in the Front Row program which will style their Front Row avatar OR they can use their coins to receive free computer time!!! the 5th grade scholars are reviewing Geometry standards with emphasis on the attributes (descriptions/characteristics/properties) of polygons in general, focusing in on the attributes of quadrilaterals and triangles. the Kdg- 2nd grade scholars are creating digital journal entries from information read or viewed. Ask your scholar to share what they have completed in the Computer Lab during March and share with a post. This month the scholars are continuing to explore different resources and applications that can be used with technology. Our Kdg - 2nd grade scholars will be creating digital online journals using SEESAW application. This application can be used with several technology devices such as computers, tablets and I-Pads. Scholars will learn how to navigate through the application to perform different tasks using the tools available in the application. Our 3rd- 5th graders will begin exploring the use of Microsoft Word by typing responses to different prompts associated with reading selections. In addition, our 5th grade scholars will experience being an online student while in the lab as they enter the MATH LAB!!! We will continue to practice typing throughout the month as we explore Technology. Ask your students to tell you the keys that make up the HOME ROW again??? Post their answers by leaving a comment. Be sure to check out the calendar under Upcoming Events to see other Bryant Events.
It's almost the end of half of the school year!!! December has been filled with Reading & Math Inventory testing as well as reading around with Scholastic NEWS, HOUR of CODE from Code.org & TypeToLearn. Make sure you ask scholars their current scores to compare with their previous testing in Aug/Sept. A lot of the scholars made noticeable gains from Aug/Sept. to Dec.
Hour of Code was huge success, while the students in all grades (K-5th) were given a chance to complete an activity during Technology or Media Center rotation DECEMBER 4-10. Bryant scholars did an awesome job "playing the games" which at the same time they were actually programming the characters to follow different commands. Even though Hour of Code has ended nationally, we will continue to explore Code.org and Program On!!! Scholastic NEWS has been added to technology curriculum, the scholars will have an opportunity to engage in several current events & activities while reinforcing reading comprehension skills. In addition the Scholastic NEWS articles & activities are cross-curricular, which means READING, MATH, SCIENCE, SOCIAL STUDIES & ENGLISH is embedded throughout. As we end the first half of the school year, we will return to continue building our typing skills by taking Typing Timed Challenges, computer programming with Code.org, Soar through reading with Scholastic NEWS and several other activities. Make sure you check back next year...January 2018 to see how we are MOUSING around in the Lab. SEE You NEXT YEAR!!!!! REMINDER--- HOLIDAY BREAK December 21, 2017- January 3, 2018 KDG classes are practicing letter recognition by identifying letters as fast as they can. 1st -5th grade classes are embracing the world of coding through Code.org. Students complete different activities, puzzles and games that lead into the world coding. Ask your students what an ALGORITHM is and how it used to move a character in a game. Scholastic has made their way into the Computer Lab. Students will be able to read engaging articles and interact with activities from magazines online while in the lab. Our Kdg. scholars current issue deals with Pilgrim Kids. Ask your Kdg. scholars how are Pilgrim kids lives alike and/or different from them. Each magazine is grade level appropriate and connects to our students. BE On The Look OUT for the TYPING CHALLENGE For 3rd- 5th students. We have a new program from Type To Learn that will help scholars build their typing skills. In addition the keyboard covers have arrived (THANKS AGAIN TO THE PTA FOR AWARDING THE LAB WITH GRANT FOR PURCHASE). The covers will be placed on the keyboards to help students learn the keys without looking at the actual keyboard. JUST REMINDER THANKSGIVING BREAK is November 20-24, 2017!!! Enjoy this time together!!! Bryant Scholars are mousing around with Online Safety. It is very important that we understand how to be safe while on the internet. As mentioned earlier our 3rd- 5th grade scholars are competing in an online challenge with other students nationally, identifying how to be safe online. Have your Bryant scholar show you some the activities from Safe Online Surfing. If you have time, go through one of the levels with your scholar and show how much you know about being safe online. Leave a comment identifying one way to be safe online with Student’s name to earn a Bengal Buck!!!
Our Kdg-2nd grade scholars will be reviewing online safety soon, be on the look for more updates. Currently our Kdg- 2nd grade scholars are reviewing math and reading concepts while practicing how to navigate with the mouse & keyboard. Ask your Kdg- 2nd grade scholar to take you through one of their favorite computer activities under their class level. Leave a comment identifying their favorite activity with Student’s Name to earn a Bengal Buck!! Bryant Scholars are “mousing” around with Technology as they become Digital Age Learners. It shows as they dive into technology during their Computer Lab enrichment time. We have completed Reading and Math Inventory in the lab, ALL GRADES YEAH!!!. Our 3rd -5th grade scholars have started our 1st Challenge, SOS Challenge. The Safe Online Surfing challenge requires our scholars to complete various activities that inform and verify online safety provided by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Once the students have completed assigned activities, they will complete the Safe Online Surfing Assessment. The scholars’ performance on the assessment will be ranked amongst other schools nationally that are participating. Our Kdg- 2nd graders are being more proficient on using the keyboard and mouse as they navigate through various activities that review some of their English/Reading and Math concepts. When the scholars return from FALL BREAK, we will continue with Typing Practice and Home Row Keys as well as our other activities we started before break. *REMEMBER WE HAVE FALL BREAK SEPTEMBER 25-29. SEE YOU IN OCTOBER*
Computer Practice is in action. Bryant scholars are improving their mouse skills with practice activities and holding the mouse properly. Ask scholars to explain how to "HUG The MOUSE" and tell which finger is used to select/click. In addition our 3rd-5th scholars are starting to sharpen their keyboard skills by working on Typing Practice located under the MORE section above. The scholars are concentrating on typing the Home Row with the correct fingers and focusing on screen without looking down at the keys. It is definitely a process but the scholars are doing a good job.
Our 1st through 5th scholars have been showing what they know academically in lab by completing the Math and Reading Inventory. Our Kdg. scholars will take the inventory in September. These two inventories will verify our scholars' current reading & math ability. Below are charts that explain scoring in more detail. Reading Inventory and Math Inventory Assessments measures are based upon national levels. Ask your scholar their scores and compare with charts above.
